During his Fall 2015 internship at Vans, design student Juno Park was tasked with creating a personal project that he would need to present at the end of the internship.
What he came up with was, URBAN X; a techy streetwear shoe designed for the urban biker.
One of the many issues Juno found with current biking cleats were that the metal clips were clunky and that the clipless biking shoes lacked durability. What he came up with is actually super interesting; Juno created a sole unit that flexed in only one direction, being rigid when applied to a bike pedal yet flexible when walking.
The shoes also feature a lateral fastening system so there’s no interference between your laces and the bike chain, a bootie construction to keep water and dirt out, and a durable suede vamp that allows for longer use when paired with abrasive foot straps.
You can see more of Juno’s impressive URBAN X concept, from initial ideation through to sample, below.
