Nike Zoom Kobe IX – Brett Golliff

Are you a different animal AND the same beast? Our boy Brett Goliff sure is. With the impending drop of the Kobe 8 system (for seemingly the past 6 months), Brett got tired of waiting and decided to drop his own system based on the current system that Nike’s system created. As usual Brett drops us with some impalpable heat, check out Brett’s concept after the jump.

In my most recent Sketchbook Drop I brought you my concept for the Kobe Bryant’s ninth signature shoe. My goal for the shoe was to create a visual that evolved both in style and most importantly in performance. The main focus of the project was to push the iconic use of the external heel counter that began with the Kobe IV, into a new area. I paralleled the use of the heel counter to the similarly manufactured cleat plate on the Nike Mercurial Soccer line. The Mercurial cleat plate has great visual depth and withstands the rigorous cuts of elite soccer athletes around the globe. I took my findings from the creation of those plates and applied it to the Kobe IX heel counter to create the “Active Control Heel Counter.” The counter begins on the lateral side of the shoe and wraps securely around the medial and integrates with the shank plate to give a firm platform under the foot.

The styling of the shoe was born from the Italian automaker Lamborghini and in particular their approach to their awe-inspiring Aventador. The midsole features facet’s that both support the foot and relieve the shoe of weight all while providing multi-directional movement through key placed flex grooves.

The upper serves as a clean, bold and iconic silhouette that will allow for a variety of color options to be explored. Just as the Kobe line has become known for, I have created multiple colorways that will all be unveiled over the next week. The first colorway you see here is the Christmas Edition. Featuring a one-piece composite upper with a matte appearance that provides Kobe with a light but serious take for his nationally televised holiday game.

Stay tuned over the coming days as I unveil the Away, Home, NSW and finally the championship bound Elite edition.’ – Brett
