Inspired by the pressure suits that fighter pilots use, the Nike AirLacing concept by designer, Ilyas Darakchiev is a ‘self-inflating shoe using the pressure of the foot to inflate the shoe without the need of additional power. There is a bubble in the sole, hermetically linked by elastic pipes with the upper side of the shoe.’ – Ilyas
As far out as the concept may seem, it’s feasibility at least functionally speaking, is quite sound. Ilyas made sure to only utilize existing technology, like the Nike air bubble sole unit, FlyWire and a reconstructed Reebok Pump style mechanism.
