These New Balance projects seem to be a theme as of late. This latest one, the NBF ONE by Brandon Coopman was created during his internship with the brand.
“This is a project I created during my time as a New Balance intern (Spring 2015). Each intern had the opportunity to design a shoe from start through final prototypes. In the Training category, we work closely with the Baseball and Football(Soccer) teams to create a broader Field of Play category. This category allows us to create training products that tie into these sports. If you train in NB, you should play in NB. With that, I noticed a major opportunity for NB in the American Football market, in which they do not create product. This project is filling that gap and emerging New Balance into a new market. This is the NBF One, an innovative football cleat for running backs and other skill players. A cleat designed around Marshawn Lynch and his amazing style of play. No other running back in the league plays like him and I wanted to create a cleat that was unlike anything else.” – Brandon
Featuring everything from a Kevlar Speedknit upper, a dual density TPU plate and a high cutting compression sock, the cleat was designed to give explosive running backs like Marshawn Lynch even more of an on-field advantage. I would have liked to have seen the tooling Brandon designed on the final model, though for obvious reasons it seems they went with a pre-existing cleat sole. Even with that though, the cleat looks super intriguing. Another beautiful example of what letting young designers get a little creative on their internships can do.
