NB has been making my life a lot easier as of late (and making me look good by proclaiming them to be imo, one of the most innovative larger, American footwear brands at the minute). Here’s another brilliant prototype, this time created by designer, Kevin Lee Reyes on his internship with the brand.
‘They had us, the interns, create a personal concept footwear project complete with a finished 1st Proto. This allowed us to vividly explore and create a vision of what NB could possibly be like in the near future. This is my project, the MR110 (a.k.a. NB Mud Runners). Enjoy! ‘ – Kevin
The ‘Mud Runner’ concept combines superhydrophobic (water resistant) materials, a 4-way stretch knit ankle shaft giving the shoe a sock like fit overall, and also preventing small stones from getting into the shoe. The design also features a quick lacing system and a ‘painted’ New Balance logo on the lateral. A smart little feature on the medial also creates an ‘N’ when viewing the shoes together from a top angle (see last pic). Overall a very well-thought out design, and the end result looks just as good as the initial sketches (which is really the best compliment you can give).
Check out Kevin’s process, from beginning sketches, to 3D mock ups and final proto, below.
