The minds behind, Project LOPER have just announced the launch of their Kickstarter campaign. A collaboration between Japanese creative platform PROEF and Dutch footwear designer RODERICK PIETERS, LOPER is an entirely glueless shoe that challenges the norms of both footwear design and footwear production methods.
Their core motivations with project LOPER were to embody social responsibility, transparency and sustainability. Utilising their past industry experience, the designers identified opportunities to improve employee conditions and reduce environmental impact. The glueless LOPER rope construction is their answer, developed to create a premium product while offering a safe and efficient alternative to often toxic processes.
A desire to facilitate a more transparent and flexible mode of production led to a simplified production line and the component based LOPER system. Focused on a more conscious economic model, the production process is centered around an awareness of techniques and resources and their distribution. The simplified, self-sufficient LOPER system is accessible for all manufacturers. Reduced man and machine power make the system particularly suited to the production of small quantities. By removing the pressure of large overhead costs and minimum order standards, the LOPER system reduces unnecessary overproduction and the impact of transportation.
Project LOPER challenges the phenomenon of mass production with a consumer responsive, production on-demand approach. Consumer demand drives production, in contrast to supply driven consumption. Valuable customer and producer feedback contributes to further product development. The enduser is closely involved with the manufacture of their product, encouraging an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship.
“Our ultimate goal is to continue improving and simplifying the shoe industry internationally. Creating beautifully designed, intelligently developed and honest-made shoes together with the footwear industry, on all continents.” – Manami Saito (proef) and designer Roderick Pieters
