Second up to our Last Comes First series is the former Native Footwar Creative Director and current No.One co-founder, Mark Gainor.
As you can see from below, Mark’s responses were fucking hilarious (I’ve included some of his footnotes below because they had me cracking up). From equating a last’s curvy heel to that of a beautiful woman’s ass, to not being a fan of some of today’s harsh traingular shaped silhouettes, you can see Mark’s super entertaining Last Comes First responses, below.
When you start thinking about “how do I walk” your fucked. Like standing in a pull over trying to “act normal, and seeing if the last is messing up your balance and equilibrium”. Thats the worst part, you have gone down the worm hole at that point. Can anyone else relate to this?
I sound like a fucking idiot but this happens to me in all last development. It freaks me out and I feel like I am in way over my head.
Everyone focuses on the toe and vamp but for me the heel is the most telling part of a beautiful last. Like a nice ass – you want it to come down and curve out in just the right place then curve back in. Check it out from behind if you want the truth.
I sound like a sad shoe pervert.
I would love to get my hands on the Nike Flyknit Racer last. Its so sleek but such a comfortable shoe. It has a really wide forefoot and super narrow waist but its incredibly comfortable and feels roomy. Last Magic.
I don’t know about these new lasts, to me some of the NMD’s looks like they lasted on a triangle. The vamp of the that shoe looks like a straight line – like a wedge. It also has a comically wide forefoot. Like a size 8 looks as wide as it is long.
I understand that those woven shoes are intended to have the foot provide the last shape but I don’t like it. And I understand from a commercial perspective why you would want as wide a shoe as you can get away with (less chance for fit issues, especially in non performance lifestyle shoes) but I prefer a more shapely last.
Again with the shoe pervert.
The last provides the form of the shoe, it has the biggest impact on the look and fit of the shoe. Everything else is essentially window dressing. Its where you go from flat (computer) designs to the real world. The last doesn’t lie, illustrator is full of lies.
When your making last adjustments you want to make tiny incremental changes because a mm change in the toe can fuck up your whole medial side. I don’t know how or why, I just know that it happens. Lasts are like black magic to me.
