Laser Cut Wooden Sandal by DongJune Lee

This laser cut sandal by DongJune Lee was created as one of the final prototypes for an “Upcycle, Recycle, Reuse, Create” project at RISD. The main objective of the course was to create a minimal footwear concepts and sample, using only used or repurposed material.

Using 1/8″ thick peices of scrap plywood scrap found in RISD’s wood shop, DongJune essentially mainually 3D printed his own sandal, and then affixed the layers of wood into position with two wooden dowels. The strap has then been woven into the cavities lasered into the wood pieces on the peripherals of the sandal. The play between the solid, fixed layers of plywood and the soft, textured strap give the sandals a super interesting mix of aesthetics.
