Issey Miyake Inspired James Harden Signature Collection by Meline Katchi

One half of the super talented, Palette studio team, Meline Katchi is always creating something extremely thought provoking and inspiring.
For this particular colleciton of footwear, Meline chose to focus on the bearded, non-defensive minded (I mean really though), lefty, known as James Harden. However, rather than doing a standard, and frankly mundane, Basketball shoe concept, because trust me, there are enough of those out there, Meline integrated some elements of a collection of clothing from, Issey Miyake.

“I incorporated the concept of Issey Miyake’s collection ‘Pleated Please’ within the structure of the tooling for grip and distribution of impact – in addition to utilizing the pleated concept in the upper materials for ease of motion. Allowing the user to move comfortably & allowing the viewer to see the shoe physically change shapes as it is in motion” – Meline.

As you can see from the images below, Meline’s created some pretty striking silhouettes. Balancing the aesthetics of a fashion brand and a the functionality of a Basketball shoe is obviously a tricky thing to do. However taking the pleated concept and bringing that over as a function in the tooling of the shoe, rather than just an aesthetic, is extremley interesting. Combining organic forms with more technically driven functionality, Meline’s created a super dynamic collection of footwear that fully embodies, Issey Miyake’s pleated theme.

You can see some of the initial inspiration, form studies and a look at the final collection of concepts, below.
