From Concept to Reality: Starting Your Own Footwear Brand

Super excited to announce that I’ll be hosting a week long work-shop with SLEM in Hong Kong this summer. I have to say i’m massively honoured to have been asked, and i’m looking forward to sharing some knowledge and generally be inspired by both the city, as well everyone that’s taking part.

Firstly, I want to make it clear that I’m by no means saying I know everything about this industry, i’m continually learning new ways of doing things within it, but what I do have, is the knowldge of how to navigate the industry, who to associate myself with, and lastly, though definitley not least, how to execute your concepts from purely imagination, into tangible objects.

The first day will include a trip around Hong Kong, soaking in the vibe and the energy of the city, looking at other products, the culture, and generally trying to cultivate possible ideas and inspirations.
The following days will cover how to connect ideas, turn those connections in concepts and then how to translate those to be sampled. We’ll also cover everything from how to surround yourself with the right people (no one does anything truely brilliant just by themselves in this industry), the business side of footwear design/development, the importance of sustainability, how to approach footwear factories, and a whole host of other topics.

I’m not saying i’m going to hand you everything on a silver platter that you need to make your own footwear brand, i’m still figuring out the perfect formula as I go, but by the end of the work-shop you’ll understand what you need to do to make your own footwear brand, from both the design aspect, as well the developmental. You’ll also get to meet other hungry & creative, future designers, hang out in Hong Kong and generally be part of a very unique event.
