Gravity Sketch has created a way for us to design footwear directly onto a last in Virtual Reality.
I’ll be the first one to say, this program still needs a little work. But have an open mind here. Imagine being able to sketch (all be it in virtual reality) straight on any last, at any moment without having to find/source and tape up an actual pair of clunky plastic lasts. That means less waste, less time-consuming tape ups and a larger margin for error. Granted you can do this with somewhat with current 3D programs, but they don’t offer the level of freedom of being able to freehand and interact with the design in a more tactile format.
And don’t me wrong, there’s a beauty to actually sketching right on a last in real life, but it’s also not always an option. So to be able to have access to your go-to last shapes and be able to have the freedom of virtually sketching directly onto them, offers up an interesting option.
As you’ll see from the video below, the program still looks fairly clunky and rudimental, but keep in mind they also have a tool that allows users to create their own brush to work with, from thick to thin or cube to spherical. It’ll be interesting to see how this technology develops in the future.
